Why It Matters

A Personal Journey to Celebrate POC Voices, Build Community, and Push for Inclusion in Gaming Culture
Yes, I’m the Random Retro Gamer, it’s not just about the games—I’m here to celebrate diversity and make sure that gaming feels like a space for everyone, no matter where you come from. I’ve realized how important it is for people of colour (POC) to see themselves reflected in the games we play, the communities we build, and the stories we share. At my age you may wonder, why gaming still matters to me?
The gaming industry has often been narrow in its representation. While retro games hold a special place in my heart, I know many of those classics didn’t always reflect the diverse experiences that so many of us live every day. As much as I love titles like Need for Speed and others, I also know we deserve more. We deserve to be the heroes, the protagonists, in the games we love. We deserve spaces to come together, share our stories, and celebrate our culture—without feeling like we’re left out.
Gaming for Everyone
It’s not just about revisiting old-school games; it’s about creating a space where the POC gaming community can feel seen and heard. It’s about remembering the past while pushing forward, ensuring that representation in gaming evolves and truly reflects the diverse world we live in.
I’m not just here to relive the classics—I’m here to make this space better for the next generation of gamers, so they can see a world where they’re not only included but celebrated.
Do you know someone whose story deserves to be told?
Gaming history is vast, and so many trailblazers have contributed to the evolution of this industry—some whose legacies may still be waiting to be uncovered. If you know someone who should be recognized for their impact on gaming or technology, I’d love to hear from you.
Email me at oldschool@randomretrogamer.ca, and let’s work together to ensure their contributions are never forgotten.
